Behind Hyundai's 100M+ Car Production: Augmenting Technology

Automotive technology has evolved to a point where it actively augments and enhances human effort.


Hyundai Motor Group’s proactive implementation and continuous advancement of innovative technologies have been a major reason behind my strong support for the brand. I find Hyundai’s technological timeline particularly relatable to my own journey, especially after being inspired by the futuristic features of the Sonata DN8 showcased at Hyundai Motorstudio.


The core of automotive technology—autonomous driving—dates back to 1993, when Professor Minhong Han of Korea University modified a Kia/Asia Rocsta and successfully demonstrated one of the world’s first autonomous urban driving experiments. However, the augmentation of automotive technology of human effort was limited until the 2020s.


Hyundai Motor Group steadily and quietly integrated advanced technologies into its vehicles. Hyundai Motor Company’s 2015 LF Sonata became the first vehicle in the world to support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; Hyundai has been consistently introducing cutting-edge technologies since then, such as the Full Digital Cluster integrated with the Navigation Screen, Smart Cruise Control, Auto Hold, Surround View Monitor, and Remote Smart Parking Assist that amazes customers in both safety and convenience.


Hyundai was able to achieve the milestone of 100 million vehicles produced following its innovations. In the U.S. market where consumers have traditionally favored Japanese and German brands, Hyundai’s growing acceptance in such markets indicates a substantial shift in consumer perception.


Looking ahead, I have considered potential managerial strategies for Hyundai Motor Group as it continues its growth.


From a strategic perspective, expanding both the high-performance N brand and the electric vehicle IONIQ lineup appears to be the most effective path forward. However, it is equally important to carefully evaluate market conditions before launching new models. Customers are concerned that even when electric vehicles offer comparable power, the fundamental difference in driving feel remains—similar to the difference between real and plant-based meat. Regional market preferences must also be considered, such as SUVs dominating the U.S. market whereas large sedans remaining highly popular in South Korea.


I have brainstormed potential future models that would fit Hyundai’s objectives moving forward.

The Sonata N would combine the sporty characteristics of the Elantra N with the refinement and presence of the Grandeur.

The IONIQ 7 N would merge the spaciousness and comfort of the Santa Fe with the high-performance power and fuel economy of the IONIQ 5 N.
