High Performance Test Drive: Genesis G70 3.3T, Hyundai Avante/Elantra N, Kia K5 GT

I am delighted to share my experience test driving several high-performance vehicles from Hyundai Motor Group: the Genesis G70 3.3T Sport Prestige, Hyundai Avante/Elantra N (2.0T), and Kia K5 GT (2.5T) with the GT1 Package.
Through hands-on driving experience, I learned that the G70 3.3T, Avante/Elantra N, and K5 GT each possess a distinct character that reflects the identity of their respective brands.
Distinctive Character & Overall Experience of Each Vehicle

The Genesis G70 3.3T Sport Prestige offers an excellent balance of high performance and luxury. Its rear wheel drive (RWD) based powertrain, strong torque from the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, limited-slip differential (LSD) for stability on winding roads, and high-capacity brakes deliver impressive performance. At the same time, the smooth 8-speed automatic transmission, Nappa leather seats, adaptive suspension, and advanced technology features such as the surround-view monitor and electronic gear selector highlight Genesis’s luxury identity.

The G70 impressed me in both performance and comfort. It delivered the strongest torque and the most engaging driving experience among the three vehicles, while still maintaining excellent ride smoothness during steady cruising.

The Hyundai Avante/Elantra N showcases Hyundai’s dedication to track-oriented performance. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, 6-speed manual transmission, N bucket seats, and aggressive cornering ability create a highly engaging driving experience.

The manual transmission is the highlight of this vehicle. The involvement required to shift gears and manage engine speed made the driving experience more enjoyable for an automotive enthusiast. The Avante/Elantra N’s manual transmission is specifically very beginner-friendly than many drivers might expect—thanks to its Rev Matching feature. When starting from a stop, the engine automatically raises the RPM slightly as the clutch is released, signaling the driver to apply the throttle smoothly.

The Kia K5 GT combines strong performance with everyday comfort. Its 2.5-liter turbocharged engine and 8-speed dual-clutch transmission provide quick bursts of acceleration, while its larger body offers a more spacious and comfortable interior.

Although the K5 GT shares the same powertrain as the Sonata N Line, the GT1 Package adds advanced features such as a surround-view monitor, blind-spot view monitor, and parking sensors. These additional features made me prefer the K5 GT with GT1 Package over the Sonata N Line. I did, however, notice that the thrilling part was a little off—possibly because Shipping Mode was enabled when I test drove the vehicle; despite enabling Sport Mode and maximizing accelerator use, the K5 GT “cancelled out” the thrill of the acceleration compared to the Genesis G70 3.3T and the Hyundai Avante/Elantra N.
Announcing the Winner / Potential Successor to my DN8

Coming from a Sonata DN8 1.6T Limited, I would most likely choose the Genesis G70 3.3T if I decide to upgrade. Its size and powertrain deliver outstanding performance; its Genesis brand and refined design communicate a strong sense of luxury; and its luxurious features, such as Nappa leather seats, a surround-view monitor, and the Lexicon premium audio system, significantly enhance the overall luxury experience.

It is also worth noting that the Genesis G70 3.3T offers an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option. While rear-wheel drive (RWD) is sufficient for most everyday driving, the AWD system provides additional peace of mind by improving traction in snowy conditions and on steep roads. Even in AWD form, the G70 retains its sporty character: in Sport+ mode, power distribution becomes more rear-biased, creating a driving feel similar to RWD. Because of this balance, the G70 3.3T AWD effectively delivers the best of both worlds — improved traction from AWD and engaging driving dynamics reminiscent of RWD.
Another factor I considered was how exclusive the upgrade would feel compared to my current DN8. Among the vehicles I tested, both the Genesis G70 3.3T Sport Prestige and the Hyundai Avante/Elantra N felt more distinctive than the Kia K5 GT, largely due to their sharper handling and more focused driving dynamics. I then compared the strengths of the G70 3.3T Sport Prestige and the Avante/Elantra N more closely.

On one hand, the Avante/Elantra N’s manual transmission is a uniquely compelling feature that is difficult to overlook. The highly performance-oriented hardware setup, N-specific bucket seats, gear knob, and exterior styling clearly demonstrate the Hyundai N brand’s strong commitment to performance.

On the other hand, the Genesis G70 3.3T Sport Prestige offers its own form of exclusivity by combining performance with luxury. Features such as Nappa leather seats, a surround-view monitor, and a blind-spot view monitor enhance both comfort and convenience without sacrificing driving excitement. As a car buyer, comfort is an important consideration for me — especially because I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time and prefer a single vehicle that meets as many of my needs as possible.

Ultimately, I chose the Genesis G70 3.3T as the most suitable potential successor to my DN8, based on its balance of performance, features, and size.
Release of the Prestige Graphite

A few months after my test drive of the Genesis G70 3.3T Sport Prestige, Genesis introduced a new top trim called the Prestige Graphite. This new trim makes the G70 an even more attractive option for me, as it adds a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster, additional Nappa leather interior details, and exclusive 19-inch graphite-finish wheels.

The Genesis G70 3.3T Prestige Graphite includes most features, if not everything, I've been seeking in a potential upgrade. Needless to say, the Genesis G70 3.3T Prestige Graphite is a true dark horse — I look forward to seeing and test driving one soon!
